Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

debt of deceased

My father died and we're trying to figure out if we are legally liable for all his debt credit cards, cell phone, etc. Is there anything we can do to erase the debt without taking a huge financial hit?

Re: debt of deceased

My sympathies on the loss of your Father.

You are not responsible for his debts. However, his estate is. If he left an estate (money, assets, etc. in his sole name)the debts get paid from this. If he had no estate, then they get nothing even though they will send bills for about 1 year (and call)hoping you'll pay something.
