Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
Debt responsibility if spouse dies
If my spouse dies am I still responsible for unpaid credit cards that have only his name on it? They are not joint cards. What if any is my obligation to pay the bills he charged on a credit card? Would beneficiary insurance money automtically go to pay such debits?

Re: Debt responsibility if spouse dies
No. His estate is responsible for unpaid obligations incurred during his life. Insurance proceeds are YOUR money and cannot be used to pay off his debts.
