Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

My name is on deceased mom's credit card???

My mother passeda way leaving a bunch of bills and barely any assets. All but two bills have been taken care of, one being a credit card bill that apparenlty, dear old mom added my name to as a co-signer or joint account holder. I never signed anything and, as a matter of fact, I found a bunch of issued cards that had not been activated, all in my name, in her apartment upon clearing it out. Now the company is coming after me for this money. I had thought I heard somewhere that the credit card company could not come after me personally unless they first provided my signature on a joint card holder or co-signer agreement. Is this true? Otherwise, do I have to pay this money?
