Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

My fiance just received a judgement for a debt that is 15 years old. When he called the attorney he was shady about the total amount owed and said that they would settle for much less the total and that the judgement was all "smoke and mirrors". Then the law firm sent a letter to his place of work asking for his personal information to garnish his wages!

The statute of limitations for a judgment is ten years, and for a debt is six years. If the lawsuit was started within 6 years of the last payment on the debt, then it is in time; otherwise, not, and the communication to the employer is something he can sue for. He should contact counsel and get started.
