Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Garshisment from a 1984 debt that was charged off over 10 yrs. ago.

I am being garnished as of 3/13/04. I found out threw payroll its a 1984 debt. I was never notified. All I remember is that it was a loan from 1982. I don't know how much it is now, all I have is the attorneys phone number that is garnishing my pay. How can a charge off from over 10 yrs ago (really 20 yrs)be collected now? I never had a garnishment and I have worked over the yrs. And its not on my credit report. Is this Legal? Can someone help me? I do not earn alot.

They cannot garnish unless there is a court judgment against you. You will have to check that out with the attorney or the court.
