Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
My ex husband, I unfortunately found out, had lied to many people and forged paperwork (collaborated by others and proven in court). I have received paperwork from a debt collector who claims that over 16 years ago, a loan was taken out in my name. They have no proof of the loan origination documents but 8 years ago, they say they attempted to serve me at my last known address - when they couldn't find me, the notice was stuck on that door, and the judge ruled me as guilty of owing the debt, because I didn't show up. I am absolutely panicked - this is thousands of dollars and I don't know what to do. How can I fight this?

Your only avenue is a motion to vacate judgment based upon improper service of process. This will be a difficult job and you should rely on counsel. Good luck.
