Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

judgement,garnish,and freezing accts.

car repo'd remaining balance 15,000 plus interest.loan is joint with live in boyfriend.Tried to tell them i have no money and could afford 50 a month and they want at least 200. can they put judgement, garnish wages or freeze account without going to court. if i pay them the 50 can they take me to court. can i close accounts and pay bills with money orders so they can not get my money.i qualify for head of household but boyfriend does not. please help i do not understand what judgements are or how they work.

You have to be served with a summons and complaint either by personal service upon you (in hand delivery) OR through substituted service...service upon a friend or relative, or by affixing a copy of the summons to your door followed by mailing same to your last residence address...You can ANSWER a summons and complaint by going to court and speaking to a clerk...If a judgment is entered you can have your bank accounts attached and your wages garnished (10% of your gross check per pay period). You can close bank accounts to protect your self but they will garnish wages.
