Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Old lawsuit

In 1993, my husband's (then boyfriend) ex-wife sued me for money that he owed her. She won this lawsuit against me, although she has never opted to collect any money from me, and claims not to want it. Is there some type of agreement that she could sign releasing me from this obligation, as I do not wish to have this matter hanging over me for the rest of my life. Thank you for your time.

Re: Old lawsuit

A Satisfaction of Judgment should be prepared and notarized by the judgment creditor and filed with the county clerk's office, otherwise the judgment remains enforceable for 20 years.

Re: Old lawsuit

Yes, although the answer depends on whether a judgment was filed. If a judgment was filed, she would have to sign and file a "Judgment Satisfaction" document. If the judgment was never filed, she can sign a release, releasing you from your obligation.
