Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Loan to a person

I lent money to a former friend and was told, in writing, that i would be paid back asap. It has been over a month since I lent him the money and have repeatedly asked for payment. I was told last week that he would pay me back tomorrow, Friday. Now he is saying he will pay me back half next week and the remaining the following week but I'm rather certain that will not happen because by that time, he will then have his rent due to be paid. He has also asked that I stop contacting him. If I cannot contact him, how else am I supposed to get my money back. Should I take him to court. Will it cost me more than the $500 that he owes me? Would I represent myself or do I need to pay a lawyer? Would this be considered small claims court? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide me.

Re: Loan to a person

Take him to small claims court and represent yourself. It is not difficult.
