Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

How long does poor credit affect your credit history?

Just would like to know how long poor credit standing exsist when you have not paid any credit off nor filed bankruptcy? Does it ever go away or is filing bankruptcy the best way to clean up my credit history?

Re: How long does poor credit affect your credit history?

Inquiries should lapse after two years.

Derogatory records should lapse after seven years.

Bankruptcy should lapse after ten years.

Check your credit report. If reports are on the record that are out of date, then write to the credit reporting agency and request that they be deleted.

Don't overlook the value of sending requests to the agencies with respect to anything that feels stale to request that they send you verification of the record or delete it. You won't get into the 700+ range this way, but you can certainly get into the low 600's this way, which is a start.

This post is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. It is a comment on the legal question posed by the poster and should not be relied upon unless and until an attorney-client relationship is entered into. Doing so would require signing an engagement letter and depositing a retainer to secure payment of legal fees.
