Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Money owed under my name.

I got two cell phones under my name for a friend and her boyfriend. We made the agreement that she was going to be responsible for both phones. I left to another country and when I came back there was a bill for $1500....not only that but a month ago, I received another bill (cancellation and late fees) for an extra $710. I can't pay for this....I'm broke....I don't know if going to a small claims court would help. I don't really think she can pay for it right away, but she's hiding from me, and the bill needs to be payed. If we go to court, is there any chance that she would be ordered to pay me back?

Re: Money owed under my name.

This is a difficult situation. It is never easy to be betrayed by a friend. Yes, the court will order her, but if she has no money the order is ineffective. Your best shot is to negotiate a payment schedule and discount with the cellphone company. You are welcome to a consultation at no fee at my offices at 42 west 44th st., NY,NY.
