ny collection-my resposibility or ex ?

i have been separated from my husband going through a divorce for the past 1 1/2 years, in that time he quit paying the loans for 3 vehicles, all of the loans i was named as co-signer. now the vehicles have been auctioned off and a portion of the debt remains. i no longer live in the state of ny and he does and owns everything that we accumulated over the years. the vehicles were all titled licensed and insured by him, but the loans were in both of our names. now it seems that it has been brought before a judge and they are asking for payment of which i dont have. who is responsible? he would not relinquish ownership so that i could licese the vehicles and pay the loans, it was a very heated separation.
