Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
past due student loans
I had a student loan that is 30 years old, gov. insured. orignially for 2,000. Recently I got a call from a collection company saying I owe $36,000. Is there anything I can do? It's been so long, I cant remember if I had a balance or not. Don't they have to show me something?

In Virginia, under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, a debt collector must make certain disclosures/notices to you, including the amount of the debt, the creditor, a statement regarding how you might contest the debt and a statement regarding how you can request a verification of the debt.
