Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York
Do I pay just because they say so?
I have a collection agency claiming I owe money for an account in 2001. I have never had an account with the company they claim the accont to be from. I contacted the creditor, they have no record of me ever having an account and have also contacted agencies that a debt would be sold to, they also have no records. I checked my credit report and find no collectors collecting for this account. When I asked for more information from this collection agency I was told they would have to send a querry and would take 6-9 months if more information is available.
How do I go about finding information on something noone is able to verify exists and will I need a lawyer to do anything for me?

no...put your demand into writing and make sure you send your letter certified mail RRR. there are numerous letters you can download that deal with responding to demands for payment...use FFDCPA as the google search term...find a site that gives you the letter and print it out. Make changes so it fits your situation and mail it out...

I do think that this is a scam. Send them a letter demanding verification of this claim, try to get something in writing from them concerning this claim.
Under the fair debt and collection law you may be entitled to a significant amount of money from them for this type of behavour.
