Payment of deceased spouse's debts

When a spouse dies, is the surviving spouse responsible for credit card debt incurred by the deceased? Spouses did not share checking accounts or credit cards; Credit cards only in each person's name without the other spouse listed as a user, and surviving spouse didn't ever use cards.
