Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Payment for work done

I was hired as an independent contractor to do work for a company. I did the work, but, I was never paid. How long do I have to bring an action. Contract was not in writing; not common in industry. I have receipts and a letter from the company promising payment by a certain specified date, but the letter is not dated itself.
