Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I just received a letter fom my local sheriff department. They are collecting on a debt that I am not aware of. It is from a university that attended about 9 years ago. It seems that the university hired a law firm to pursue the money owed. They got a judgement for yonkers court. The judgement has been passed to the sheriff. I want to get this situatuion handled. Should I call the university or the sheriff. If it is something I owe I am willing to pay. i do not have the entire amount, I would like to work on a payment plan. What should I do first?
