Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I recently had a former roomate purchase a mattress from me and the check she wrote bounced. She stated that she thought it would bounce and has also stated that she has mailed the check several times, but it never arrives. She is in this country on anschool visa. I tried to enlist assistance from her uncle who lives in this country, however, she still has not sent money. I live in Brooklyn, NY and the check bounced at my credit union in CT. What steps can I take to collect the money owed and any fees sustained?

If she lives in NY and the check is under $5,000, you should commence a small claims action seeking damages for 1. Nonpayment for the mattress and 2. The bounced check.
