Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Subrugation claim

I received a subrugation claim from an insurance company requesting payment for a claim they had paid. The incident involved vandalism to a vehicle. In short, from what I was told by a third party, I was seen in the vicinity of where the vandalism took place and my name and address were given to the insurance company days after the police report was made. However, I have never been contacted by the police, any attorney or the insurance company (except for demand of payment 4 months after the incident). Does the insurance company have the legal right to demand money from me?

Thank-you for your time and consideration.
