being sued by credit card company

I owe money on a credit card that I was unable to pay. Last year I received a document saying that Chase Bank was suing me. However the document did not have any case number. The letter came regular mail with no return address. I sent a certified letter to the court and to the law firm listed on these documents asking for clarification. I never received any response. I have not received anything from Chase stating the amount due. I have gone online and have made a couple of small payments on this card. Last week I received a post card with the return address of the civil court saying that I have to appear in 2 weeks time. It happens that I have received a small inheritance thismonth and I want to pay off all credit cards. Is it best to pay this one off and then go to court with proof I have paid it? What is the best thing to do? Thank you.

You are best off going to court, speaking with an arbitrator, and entering into a formal written agreement for payment. If you pay the card prior to court, you may have a problem proving payment - and, you may be paying the wrong entity.
