Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Summons for court on a debt

I received and answered a summons for court on a debt I owe. Since the debt was ncurred I became 100% disabled and am on SSI. This info was in my answer to the law firm (defendant). If the law firm takes this to court and is awarded a judgement my question is can they attach a lien on my vehicle which is 6 years old. I cannot afford to get another if I am forced to sell this one. Another person's name is also on the title. Thank you.

Re: Summons for court on a debt

A judgment will attach and your account frozen if found...it is exempt from execution if you show that the funds are solely from exempt sources (SSI disability, for example). More likely than not the vehicle is safe.

Good Luck
