the summons i received is dated a month prior to my receiving

I assume you are being sued.

If so, you should read the summons thoroughly.

It should say how many days you have to respond after you were SERVED.

Oftentimes, there is a 2-5 week delay on the dates the summonses are drafted versus the dates the summonses are served.

However, it is impossible to advise you further without looking at the document.

Therefore, if there aren't explicit instruction on the summons regarding when the time period for response begins, you should take the summons and complaint to a lawyer.
