The charge is a violation, not a crime. Nevertheless, its always better to have a lawyer defend your rights to make sure the DA does not take advantage of you. For example, if you decide to accept a plea, the DA may ask for community service or some type of program. Having a lawyer defend you will ensure that the DA does not overreach.

No but you should. It can lead to all kinds of trouble not the least of which includes orders of protection fines and potentially jail.
