Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I'm 21, live in ny state. got caught shop lifting an item under $20, in process car was searched & small amount of marijuana was found. was arrested and given an appeearance ticket. was told drug court would be mandatory. When I was 16 I got into trouble but was given youthful offender. What are the chances the petty theft would be reduced to some kind of violation where wouldn't have a record and how long is drug court typically? also i'll have to get a public defender.

It depends on your attorney and the judge. Unfortunately, a public defender probably won't spend much time on your case. Consider calling a few local criminal defense lawyers for a fee quote before putting your case in the hands of a public defender.
