Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

1st time offender

i had a friend arrested 2 days ago and he is being charged with 3rd degree crim. possession of a control substance allegedly it was 4oz's of powder cocaine and ecsatcy pills. He was staying at his girlfreinds house with his son. She also was arrested for the same charge. He has never been in any trouble ever making this his first offence. What does or can happing now and if he does get any time how much time could he face being his first offence
