Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Hello, I am an 18 year old, full-time college student who was recently charged with a UPM (Unlawful Possession of Marijuana). Unfortunately, do to my current finical situation, I can not afford a legal representative to accompany me during my court case. My main concerns rest in loosing federal funding at my school, and having the UPM permanently on my record. Please tell me what I should and should not do the day of my court appearance so as to not worsen my situation.

There are other options for students who cannot afford private legal representation. In the past, my office has done everything from providing free telephone consultations to offering low-cost options in which my office speaks with the court clerk to ascertain the situation and garner as much information as possible and then providing the student with a step-by-step guide to what to do on the court date. Please let me know if you would like to further explore any of these options.

Good luck,
