Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I can't afford a lawyer and face comtempt charges.
My ex is taking me to court stating I am in comtempt of court for not paying him momnies he says I owe.I did go to court on the issue but I NEVER signed any documents pleading guilty and agreeing to pay him.He has now taken me back to court on comtempt charges and I told the Judge I can NOT afford a lawyer and she said ''TOO BAD FOR YOU!!'' My ex's lawyer is asking the Judge to put me in jail for not being able to pay .I am on Social Services and i'm disabled.Ithought that if you were facing charges where you can go to jail that you have the right to a lawyer and if you can't afford 1 that the state has to provide 1 for you. Is this true and if so then why did this Judge not tell me so.I feel that I am innocent and even have proof for it and the Judge does'nt want to see it. 5 Outher Judges have thrown this case out for there being No Grounds and/or Juridiction. He is bringing this case to every court he can.Any Suggestions, this Judge is known for throwing people in jail and has stated she would cause I don't have $$$$. How can she do this. How can I be in comptempt when I NEVER signed ANYTHING agreeing to pay him $$$$... PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I have court on the 25th and I am so scared.

You are not entitled to a lawyer in a civil case. If the court ordered you to pay money then your signature is not required. All you can do is tell the court of your circumstances.

You can ask for an '18B' lawyer.
