An ARRAIGNMENT is a court appearance in which the charges are spelled out to the accused in open court. Usually, the accused will WAIVE the reading of the charges in court and simply be handed a copy of the charges.

At the arraignment, the accused also must enter a plea; normally, a NOT GUILTY plea is entered.
