Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

I just got arrested for drug possession. I have never been arrested before or in any legal trouble for that matter. Im looking for a lawyer now but I need to know what is the typical consequence for an offense like this? And do I lose my financial aid? It was barely any weed, under a gram. I just have no idea about my situation?

You were probably charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana in the 5th degree. If that is what you are charged with then you don't have very much to worry about. The consequences for a first offense is usually an Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal under Criminal Procedure Law section 170.56.

I still agree that you should retain a local attorney because if you have been charged with something other than what I have listed above the consequences can be very severe for actual drug possession.

You will probably be offered an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, which means that if you stay out of trouble for one year, the case will be dismissed completely.

Inasmuch as you did not relate the specific charges,it is impossible to predict the outcome. Some drug possession charges are more serious than others. That being said I would be happy to have a free phone consultation with you. Please contact my office @7188340087.

It would be highly recommended to have an experienced lawyer with you defending you and preserving your rights in court. It would also greatly increase the chance of lowering the charges or possible dismissal. We have substantial experience handling these types of cases and reasonable fees, however, we would need some more information before making a complete and proper determination. You are welcome to contact us for a free consultation.
