Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Arrested for Shoplifting in New York City

I know someone who was recently arrested in New York City for shoplifting. Its a first time offense and the item shoplifted had a value of about $10. Does he need a lawyer? If found guilty, what would be the likely sentence/penalty the court would give? The person arrested has some psychological issues. Would that help his case?

retaining an experienced attorney would substantially increase the chance of a good reduction or even a possible dismissal depending on several factors, fristly if there was any prior criminal record.

We have substantial experience handling these types of cases, however, we would need some more information before making a complete and proper determination. You are welcome to contact us for a free consultation.

Re: Arrested for Shoplifting in New York City

A charge of Petit Larceny in New York state, is a class "A" misdemeanor and carries a possible sentence of up to one year in jail, so yes your friend should get a lawyer. A competent lawyer should be able to resolve this case for your friend with a non-jail disposition and ideally without a criminal conviction. Please feel free to contact my office if we may be of any assistance.
