background
if you are stopped or detained, police always ask if youve been arrested to establish cause for a search or decide who may be guilty. can they ask this? when they do, do i have to answer?

I've been practicing criminal defense for 25 years and don't recall a client ever telling me he or she was asked such a question.
You do not have to speak with the police at all; your only obligation is to give ID and your name and address. You have nothing to gain by speaking to them.
