Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

I used a bail bondsman to post bail for a friend but on the date of sentencing he failed to appear. The bail amout was 10,000 of which I put up 3,000. The bondsman sent me a letter stating that they are keeping my 3,000 and that I amresponsible for the other 7,000. Is there a way out of this?
