Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I bought a MacBook off of Craigslist a couple months back brand new, and today was contacted by a detective from my local police department, (nypd) apparently some 17 year old girl was robbed and they had a supeana to get the laptop so now I have to go turn the laptop in. I have two questions, even though the detective told me I won't be arrested can I be apprehended even though I wasn't aware of this being stolen, and 2 is there any monetary payment for me, I'm losing out on $800

How much was the computer new? How old was it? I have seen people get arrested in situations like this if the deal was too good. The theory is the buyer knew or should have known the computer was stolen based on the price. Do not make any statements to the police. I suggest that you hire a criminal defense lawyer before doing anything else.
I hope you have some documentation indicating the purchase was made from Craigslist. Without proof of purchase , it is possible you could be charged. I would suggest that you retain a criminal defense attorney before you have any further contact with the police. There is no way you will be compensated for your purchase unless you can locate & then bring civil action against the seller. That is not likely. You may contact my office @ 718-834-0087 for a phone consultation.
