Is it legal to put a camcorder on your porch and tape people without their knowledge?

To the best of my knowledge, it is ok to tape people on your property in situations that are not private. eg. you can not tape someone getting undressed, even in your bedroom without their permission or in the bathroom but you can set up a servaliance camera in your back yard or front yard but not into someone elses property or the street.
