Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I got charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree for possessing my grandmothers prescription pills for her cancer. This is my first time ever being charged and have never been arrested. The cop gave me to tickets in addition one for no turn signal and one for no seatbelt. I'm trying to drop the charges down to an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal with community service or probation. What is the likelyhood of this happening and should I pay for legal representation ?! Also I got stopped by state trooper who explained if I told him where I got the pills from he could he help to drop some of the charges. I told him the pills were my grandmothers and I didn't know what the he'll he was talking about.

It all depends on what you were doing with your grandmother's pills. If she left them in your car or you were taking them to her, you are not guilty of possession. If it was innocent possession, an affidavit from her could result in a dismissal.
You should not expect jail time, but it would be highly recommended to have an experienced lawyer with you defending you and preserving your rights in court. It would also greatly increase the chance of lowering the charges or possible dismissal. We have substantial experience handling these types of cases and reasonable fees, however, we would need some more information before making a complete and proper determination.
