Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

why was i charged

i was going to the shopping center a guy from the community asked me for a ride. when we got there we parted ways. I went into the CVS and then in the food store. While in the food store i saw him again i paid for my things and left the store. As i drove out of the parking lot i saw him being arrested on the street. Later on in the day i was told that the police where looking for me . I went to the police department and they charged me with stealing from the store i had not stolen anything and did not know what the guy was doing
