Can you be charged with stealing or possessing stolen property if it was never reported stolen? I ask because the police took an old I'd that I bought off some drunk guy and now they said I could.be charged with possession of stolen property if he said it was stolen.

it does not have to be reported stolen when you acquired it, but it may be reported stolen subsequently. In any event if your acquired it without permission is was stolen under the law.

Unless you honestly believed that the drunk sold you his ID, you be convicted of possessing stolen property if the actual owner turns up.
