Can a convicted murderer be a witness
I would like to know if a convicted murderer can be called as a defense witness in a separate trial.

Yes, he may not be the best witness in the world, but there is no legal impediment to his testifing assuming you can get him into the courtroom to do so.

Any person, including a convicted murderer, may be called as a witness at trial by either side. However, if called by the defense, and depending on what he is being called to testify about, such person will likely be subject to prosecutor's extensive questioning about his prior convictions.
