Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Court question

what happens when you go to court for shop lifting? A fine was already paid to the store's laywers and we now have a court date. Is there another fine that we now have to pay?

Re: Court question

The money you paid to the lawyers was NOT a "fine"; it was a civil penalty allowed by law (to compensate the poor store for their security costs, etc.). You should have waited until the resolution of your court case to pay the lawyers. Apparently, you went to court without a lawyer or didn't tell your lawyer about the letter you got from the store's attorneys.

Re: Court question

Your payment to the store has no bearing on the outcome of the case in court,it may be a mitigation. Please contact my office with more specific details and I will be happy to offer a free phone consultation.
