Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
Gen oligations law 11-105
My son was caught shoplifting and told me that he was not arrested. He got a letter in the mail saying that he was going to be sued if he didn't pay an amount of $350.00. He told me that he stole a CD. Is this amount some kind of fine or is my son lying to me about what was stolen. Thank you for your time..

Yes, the store can sue him, in civil court, for the shoplifting, whether or not he was charged in criminal court. I recommend you read the statute cited in your email.
