Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
General harassment
Where does harassment come into play? There is a guy I use to be friends with him and his wife. He works alot out of town so he is not around much. Me and his wife were good friends and it is a small town, so rumors of us sleeping together started going around. We never did and were just friends. After a few years they got divorced. She moved away and is with someone else now and he is still around and is now dating a woman from here. But now when he sees me he gives me dirty looks and makes coments out loud to people that we both know. Comments like ''how can you hang out with this scumbag'',''he is a low life piece of sh**'',''I should punch his face in''. All of it out loud so I can hear and everyone else can too. All of this is in a public bar. Even a couple of threats spoken to me when he has aproached me from behind and I did not see him. He said, ''watch your back'',''you will be sorry''. this has been going on and off for a few months. It just seems like it keeps getting worse. I have always have ignored it and never said a word back because he has a a record of past violence and arrests. I just keep my space and want no trouble or harm to me. It is now just starting to make me feel uncomfortable to go out to socialize. Thanks

Re: General harassment
I would fill out a report at your local police department. They might have a word with him. I would also change bars. The law is not a barrier to someone who truly wants to hurt you. So even if you had a restraining order or he was jailed for a short time, if he wants to hurt you, he will. Its really on you to avoid him.
