Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
harassment 2nd
I have been charged with harassment in the 2nd and must go to court in 3 weeks. My question is: what are the possible outcomes/fines? I have NEVER been in trouble in my life! Also-should I retain a lawyer?

Possible outcomes range from one (1) year in jail to dismissal.
Based on what you state in your question, my opinion is you should try to obtain an ACOD, adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. The case would then be dismissed after 6 months or a year, as long as you don't get arrested or charged in that period. There may also be conditions attached, like community service.

Every case is different. You should absolutely retain a lawyer. This could make a major difference with regard to the outcome.
Re: harassment 2nd
Depending on the case, county, and your own situation, the charges may sometimes be downgraded to a violation, you could have a disposition through an ACD, or have the charges dismissed. Pleading guilty to a violation has its own consequences and sometimes the deal the prosecutors offers is not the best deal you should or could receive.
As to hiring a lawyer, when you have a medical problem with a potential of complication, you generally don't cure yourself but see a doctor. I think you should consult with a lawyer and understand what is it you're going to deal with.

It would be a good idea to consult with an attorney.

The possible outcomes vary based upon many factors. You have not provided enough info to offer an expert opinion. You should retain a competent criminal defense attorney to handle the matter to get the best outcome. I would be happy to have a free phone consultation with you. Generally on a first offense, and something like this, the potential for prison time is highly unlikley. However, there are many potentially damaging contingencies to discuss here.
There is the possibility of a permanent criminal record which would not be a good thing obviously.
Also, there is the potential for punishment lesser than imprisonment, usch as probation.
I would suggest hiring an attorney if at all possible. You will receive a diffrent level of care and representation which would lead to a greaterl evel of protection for you, especially on a first offense.
