Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Harassment by telephone

I received a call fron the Nassau County police saying a friend of mine was receiving harrassing phone calls from a number traced to me. he said the phone calls were of ''music and Echoing''. When I called my freind he was upset that I hadn't returned his calls for seven months and his whole family was upset by the calls. I know for a fact that the numbers I know of his that only he has access. I am supposed to call back the detective to id my number. What should I do what can be done to me? what are my rights.

Re: Harassment by telephone

You should consult with a lawyer who practices criminal law before you call the detective back. The facts in your question were not totally clear to me but it sounds like you are facing a possible arrest for aggravated harassment, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. I am not suggesting that either of these will happen to you, but it is a serious charge. There is no point in your making the prosecution's job easier by making admissions to the police - at least not without speaking to a lawyer first. I am a former federal and state prosector and now handle criminal cases like this. Feel free to call me at 212-622-7180 if you wish to discuss your case.
