getting information on a case

i want to know how i can get information on a persons case who is already in prison. her case is fairly old since she has been incarcerated since 1998. she was convicted in NY. my mother is in prison and i have looking for lawyers to help with her case so she can get out, but they all tell me i need infomation on her case to see what they can do for her. i think she may need to appeal or something like that. i need help and i need to know where to begin. also i want to know how i can find inexpensive or possible free lawyers to help with getting her out of prison. please help

You are asking a lot. Post Conviction relief can be very expensive. Your mom was convicted a long time ago. You need the indictment, and any appeal she may have taken and the decision in same. You should also have a transcript of the trial or hearings if there were any. Sentencing minutes are important too. She if you can get the whole court folder with the motions to the lawyers you chose.

If you think she is actually innocent, you may want to contact the Innocence project nearest to her. Sometimes they will find Pro Bono counsel... but don't count on it.
