The Insanity Defense

What standard is used, in New York State, to determine whether a defendant is insane or not? Also, is there a difference, letally, between ''not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect'' and ''insane''?

A. McNaughten is still basically alive and well in NY.

B. No there is no practical difference in the two.
