In a trial can defendent know members of their jury

Not usually. The jury is usually polled to ask if they know any of the parties, the lawyers or the judge. I guess in small counties that might be impossible but it seems that if someone knows the defendant, there should be vior dire as to how they know each other and whether the juror can be fair.
