Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
larceny in the fourth
My niece was cought stealing at her job. She was told she had to make a statement against herself or they would not let her leave she worked at Target. So she went ahead and made a statement against herself and said she stole 1200 from the store because the other employees would not let her leave until she did. In return after the signed statement they called the police and then the officer had her sign a new statement. She is eighteen never been arrested my question is what is she facing being that she has two statements against her signed by her and she has never been in trouble?

Re: larceny in the fourth
She is facing grand larceny charges, which potentially carry jail, probation or a split sentance. She should have never signed any statements without an attorney's advice, that is past. A competent criminal defense attorney should be able to minimize the damage by perhaps arranging a deal involving restitution and then a reduction of charges.
