a letter

my son was involved in a hit and run charge and is in jail.

i wanted to write a letter of apology to the victims family, are they by law allowed to have this letter publisized? if they do an interview with the newspaper can they reiterate what i have said ?

Yes, the victim's family can do anything they like with a letter you send them. They could publish it, read it on TV or anything else because there's nothing to stop them from doing so. James S. Kats www.lawjsk.com

Writing a letter of apology to the family may relieve some guilt, but it will not help your son at this point. Anything you say can be published, and depending on what you say, could be used against your son. In fact, if you were to say something incriminating about your son you could be called as a witness against your son!

Once you pass on such a letter you are relinquiching your right to the privacy contained in those statements, they can be published and/or used against you or your son. I would not advise you go ahead with such a move.
