Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
I live with someone that is a sex offender...no contact type and the cops searched our home for porn and took and broke items that had nothing to do with the person that had the offense...do I have any legal rights to prevent them from searching my stuff?....I had nothing to hide but after getting my house trashed I'm upset and angry...seems to me they would have to have all of our names on the search warrant...I feel my personal rights were badly violated

Please understand, under the sex offender statute, depending on the offender level, the police have the right to enter the premises of the offender and search the entire property, not just the are that the offender lives. Any area that the offender has access to will be searched. If you are living with that person, you may or may not have any privacy rights. No search warrant is required under this statute depending on the offender level.
