What are reasons for a mistrial in criminal proceedings? By category, including defense attorney's misdeeds, please.

This is a VERY difficult question which would require an answer the length of a book to be complete. Basically, however, there needs to have been some error which had a serious impact on the result of the case... an error in and of itself is not sufficient unless it is ruled that it was sufficient to cause prejudice.
